Man set up hit to help jailed dadBy HOLLY ZACHARIAHMcClatchey News ServiceBELLEFONTAINE —Carl Stevenson apparently was blab-bingto authorities about the unsolved disappearance and likely murder of 18-year-old Mike Lat-timer in Logan County.And, authorities say, Joe E. Rosebrook Judd Jr., whose father has long been considered a suspect in Lattimer’s disappearance in 1999, wanted Stevenson silenced.According to conversations taped April 6 and played as evidence during a hearing in Belle-fontaine Municipal Court Wednesday, Judd offered money and suggested a spot for an ambush.Judd said on the tape that he \yould feell his Ford Mustang to raise, $1,000 and that his dad, fjc^iicfeebnx)!^ cbuldbffermbre if Stevenson was stopped.Terty Current offered to do the deed.Current had been in prison with Joe Rosebrook, who is serving 10 years for operating a vehicle chop shop and for hiring a hit man to kill a witness in a case against him in 2004. Rosebrook has never been charged in the disappearance of Lattimer, who worked on cars for him and then disappeared in November 1999, after he began cooperating with sheriffs detectives investigating Rosebrook.After Current’s release from prison late last year, he told authorities that Rosebrook had talked to him about Lattimer’s murder. In an effort to solve the cold case, detectives paid Current $4,500 to be an informant, wired him and had him befriend Judd.“It wouldn’t be hard,” Judd says on the tape. “One big whack in the back of the (expletive) head with a big baseball bat.... Even if he’s not dead, he won’t talk again.”Judd, 33, is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, a first-degree felony.Detective Keith LeVan of the Logan County sheriffs office testified yesterday that after that April 6 conversation, deputies helped Current stage what looked like a murder and sent him back to Judd’s Rush-sylvania home.“Teny Current took a crowbar, bloody gloves, bloody paper towels and a garbage bag and ” went back to Joe Judd and told him it was done,” LeVan said.Deputies then swept in and arrested Judd.Defense attorney Edwin Dougherty said Judd was not the originator of the plot; the offer to kill Stevenson had come from Current. He said no money changed hands.Judge John Ross said yesterday that the evidence against Judd was weak, but he agreed to transfer the case anyway to Logan County Common Pleas Court.
