Spending Due To PayNEW YORK —(UP)— This the year, according to Branch Rickey, when their strenuous activity in the baseball marts is going to start paying dividends for the Pittsburgh Pirates.Rickey, who has gotten more than his share of Pirate gold since the new owners took over in Pittsburgh and started a thorough house cleaning Job, believes that most experts are overlooking ’IS Pirates.'■. .“I think they definitely will finish in the first division and that they have a chance to take it all,” Rickey explained.Bill Meyer, the new skipper of the Pirates, is inclined to go with the Dodger boss so far as a possible first division berth is concerned, but he won’t do much thinking about a pennant until he solves his second base problem. That is the Weakest spot on the club as It shapes up today for the 1948 national league pennant race. The situation is such that Meyer is willing to give up one of his first line pitchers for an established second sacker. Thus far there have been no takers, but the chances are good that the Pirates, who have made a habit of such things the past two years, will swing a deal before the season opens. The Pirates will present the most changed club in the league.
