Mr. Moms, who is the best known business man in Shelby county, and who has a wide acquaintance in business circles in all partsof Indiana and Ohio, bas a very interesting career, and he is what might be termed the youngest old man in Sbelbyvilie.He was bom April 1th. 1830, in a little log cabin In West Franklin street, this city. He is the oldest living male who was born within the limits of this city at that time and still residing here, and tho oldest female bom in Shelby viHe and still living here is Mrs. Rebecca Worden, who Is eighty-four years of age. Mr. Morris, at 1he age of thirteen years, was left an orphan and he went to Lebanon, Ohio, to live with an uncle. He became a telegraph operator and also u merchant and remained in that city until 1S75, when he returned to this tity, where he has since been in business.Mr. Morris enlisted in the war twice, having served in tho sanitary commission in 1862. He was also adjutant of his regiment. Since the warhe has become prominently identified with Dumont Post, No. IS, G. A. It., niid at the present time is a eoionel on the staF of the Indiana Commander. Taking an active Interest in public affairs, he has been a member of the school board and also of the council as a councilman and as mayor.TTe is known in central Indiana os being the oldest dry goods merchant, who has been in continuous business under virtually tho same roof, his first location being the one adjoining the building now occupied by the Morris Company department store The business was established in 1875 with him at the head of it rtnd it continues under the same controlling management.
