Becker leads school boardcontendersKarl Becker, the most experienced candidate for the board of education, incumbent John O’Connell and newcomer Eugene Lillge won the three seats up for grabs on the board in Tuesday’s election.Becker, first elected in 1969, won easily, capturing 14 Appleton wards and tying one of the total 20, plus winningBeckerO’Connellboth precincts in the Town of Grand Chute and in the Town of Harrison.Becker received 7,841 votes while O’Connell received 7,286 (winning in four wards) and Lillge 5,890, or 296 votes more than the fourth place finisher. Losing were Corinne Goldgar with 5,594 and Janet VanAsten with 5,432.Becker, 55, 1218 W. Frances St., is an engineer with the Wisconsin Telephone Co. He has been on the board since 1969 and is vice president and chairman of the negotiations and personnel committee.O’Connell, appointed last August to fill a vacancy created b the death of John Schneider, is an attorney, former FBI agent and an instructor at Fox Valley Technical Institute. He is 57 and lives at 431 E. Alice St.Lillge, 24, 830 W. Fifth St., is unemployed and is a 1973 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a political science degree and qualifications to teach. He is an Appleton native.Liilge
