Southeast Iowa expressway wins state OKAMES (AP) — The Iowa Transportation Commission has approved a $35 million plan to build a key segment of the Des Moines-to-Burlington four-lane expressway in southeast Iowa.An 11-mile stretch of U.S. 34 will be built from west of Danville to West Burlington, including bypasses of Danville and Middletown. Grading is scheduled to be done in 2000 and paving in 2001.Burlington-area officials applauded the decision to expand the highway to four lanes, saying it would strengthen the state economy.The Des Moines-to-Burlington project has been classified as a high-priority corridor by Department of Transportation officials. Construction on the entire expressway is scheduled to be complete by 2004.
