The real Khrystyne Haje is hardly the class wallflowerBy Constance PaceNo matter how popular they may have been in high school, most people seem to remember their insecure teenage school years from the viewpoint of a wallflower.After all, hasn't the wallflower character, usually played by Molly Ringwald, been a stock character in all of John Hughes’ teen films, from “Sixteen Candles'* to “Pretty in Pink? Ironically — and tellingly — Ring-wald’s wallflower is an astonishingly beautiful redhead. And Simone Foster, the wallflower in ABC’s “Head of the Class/’ is played by another beaulifu! redhead, Khrystyne Haje. Haje, who’s 17, is about as far from a wallflower in real life as is humanly possible. Outgoing to the point of exuberance, she says there’s no competition among the actors and actresses who play the genius students in Mr. Moore’s (Howard Hesseman) class.“Oh, we have so much fun together!” says Haje. “Every week, the emphasis of the episode swings from one of us to the next.Haje. a California native, got into acting via modeling, which she started after her mother insisted that she study Spanish in high school rather than French. “She thought it would be more useful in Los Angeles, says Haje. “After that, we got into a taik about what I wanted to do with my life, and I said model.' She said OK. and a fashion photographer took some shots of me. A French agent saw them and said. 'I must have this girl. She must come to Paris!' I had two weeks there, and then it was on to Italy. I'll never forget it.Although she enjoyed modeling and acting, she says her first priority is her schoolwork at North Hollywood High School, where she’s currently a junior, and active on the speech and debating teams. “I'm in a class called IHP, which stands for Individualized Honors Program. When we first started ‘Head of the Class,' our class had no name. I had been talking with the producers, and then all of a sudden I noticed that our class was being called IHP. Isn't that neat?”When questioned about Molly Ringwald, Haje jokes. Red hair is so in right now! I had mine long before it became fashionable.
