Pat Tehan/The RegisterFullerton's David McIntosh, who plays in the hole, is taking aim at scoring 100 goals this season.ofMcIntosh pools his talents for Fullerton’s water polo teamBy Billy RhodesThe Registerut of the water, David McIntosh doesn’t look like a star athlete. But once he hits the pool, perceptions of him quickly change. His build — he stands 5-11 and weighs 150 pounds dripping wet — in no way prepares you for what is to come from the Fullerton High water polo team’s hole man. A recent game against Mira Costa in the South Coast Tournament graphically illustrates what McIntosh can do and what he has meant to an otherwise inexperienced Indians squad. The first quarter was one of McIntosh’s best as the senior scored five goals to give the Indians a 5-0 lead. It isn’t theamount as much as the variety of ways he scores that is the most striking. For instance:■ On the Indians’ initial possession, McIntosh makes a quick move on a defender after getting the ball in the 2-meter area and scores 20 seconds into the period.■ Fifty seconds later McIntosh again is given the ball in the hole and powers the ball over a defender draped all over him.■ With 3:40 left in the quarter, McIntosh finds himself open from 10 meters and cross fires from off to the left of the goal for his third goal in 2:20.■ His fourth goal doesn’t come for another 1:25, when, after faking a shot to put the goalie out of position, he lobs the ball over his head.A Mira Costa mix-up helpsMcIntosh to his fifth goal as he is freed up in transition and bounces the ball off the water and past the goalie from 10 feet with 20 seconds left.McIntosh added a goal and an assist in the second period and his seventh goal of the match in the third period as Fullerton cruised to an 11-4 victory.“That (first quarter) was just, I don’t know, kind of a freak thing,’’ McIntosh said.Fullerton opponents wouldn’t consider it such a strange occurrence.McIntosh has 67 goals and 39 assists in 16 games this season, those totals coming from the demanding hole position which is usually manned by bigger, more muscular players.“He’s got kind of a wiry strength,’’ Indians coach RobPlease see MclNTOSH/D6e Hal Stoelzle/The Registerbtopping opponents has made CdM goalie Jim Wagner the most dominating player in the pool.Corona del Mar senior goalie Wagner ‘walks on water’By Chris MonahanThe Registerorona del Mar’s Jim Wagner plays a position that, at times, isolates him from his teammates. It’s also a position where he faces the opposition’s best.It is also a position where Wagner can dominate a game, something he is doing in water polo this season.Wagner is the Sea Kings’ goalie and he can set the tone for his teammates either by giving up a couple of quick goals or making a few big saves. He has done a great deal of the latter this season. This season, Wagner has been a standout in an otherwise team-oriented game. He has allowed only 25 (3.57 per game) goals in leading Corona del Mar to a 6-1 record.REIGN CONTINUES:Sunny Hills looks to extend its Freeway League dominance/D6“It’s totally different when you play Corona and Wagner is back there. He walks on water,’’ said Sunny Hills coach Jim Sprague. “He changes everything. You have to play to beat him.’’Corona del Mar coach John Vargas is a a bit more conservative in his praise, but said, “He is certainly one of the top goalies in the county. He can make the team look good and vice-versa. He’s a very good goalie, but it goes both ways.’’Wagner, a senior, has started the past 2xk years, although playing goalie literally came by accident.“I cut my chin surfing the summer before my freshmanyear and wasn’t able to swim,’’ said Wagner. “They needed a goalie. They put me in the cage and I liked it a lot.’’Wagner and Vargas say there was never any doubt that he would remain a goalie, even after the injury healed. In view of the result, the move was a brilliant one.Vargas said the success is the combination of Wagner’s sharp reactions and experience.“The best thing going forhim is his competitiveness, hehas a good game sense,’’ Vargas said. “He knows where the shots will come from. That takes time and a lot of games. Please seeWAGNER/D6D6PREF
