By DEB SHOPE Daily News Staff WriterThe congregation of St.Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Marklesburg, James Creek, will be celebrating their 200th anniversary as a congregation beginning with worship services at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the Old Stone Church, located on Route 26, Marklesburg.“Evening worship will be patterned after the original services held in the 1800s,” said Donald Costlow, pastor of St. Matthew’s. “We are pleased to have as our speaker for the evening, Volker Molt, who is a member of St. Matthew’s.”The celebration continues Saturday and Sunday, Oct 12 and 13.Festivities Saturday include a turkey dinner at the Marklesburg Fire Hall. The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the fire company will serve at 1 p.m. Reservations for the meal must be made by Oct. 3, by calling Jean Brumbaugh at 658-3727.During the afternoon, former pastors will share thoughts mid at 2:30 p.m. a program of music and fellowship will begin. Displays of church events from throughout its history will be on display for those who wish to browse.On Sunday, the parish worship service will begin at 11 a,m. Bishop Gregory Pile of the Allegheny Synod, based in Altoona, will deliver the message. A luncheon will follow. Displays will be set up at the church as well, for those desiring more time to look over the history or for those who may not have been able to attend Saturday’s dinner.Memorabilia, including a commemorative booklet, will be available for church-goers as well as visitors. Other items are: silver- orgold-colored Christmas tree ornaments, plates, tile trivets and key chains.While interviewing Clair and Carol Grove, co-chairpersons of the 200th anniversary committee along with Pastor Costlow and Jean Brumbaugh, both of whom are also serving on the committee, 1 had the distinct pleasure of perusing some of the artifacts to be displayed,Among them are copies and originals of the minutes of the meetings of church officials, The original indenture, beautifully inked with a flowing script, reads as follows: This indenture, made the sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-five, between Matthew Gamer of Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, and state of Pennsylvania and Mary, his wife, of the one part •and Samuel Hetrick and George Gamer, trustees of St. Matthew’s German Lutheran Church and their successors in office in trust for the said German Lutheran congregation of the other part, witnesseth, (Doesn’t that word roll off your tongue?) that the said Matthew Gamer and Mary, his wife, by reason of the love which they bear toward the cause of Christianity and that their special affection for the members of St. Matthew’s Church and said German Lutheran congregation generally as well for and in consideration of the sum on one dollar lawful money to them in hand paid by the said Samuel Hetrick and George Gamer, trustees as aforesaid, at and before the enseal-.ing and delivering hereof the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have given, granted, aliened and enfeoffed and con-
