Oats have not begun to move just yet.Miss Birdie Keeler made the trip from Stonewall to Winnipeg on a bicycle in two minutes less than an hour and a half on Saturday. This is a very good record for a lady rider, and was rendered possible by the splendid condition of the roads. - Free Press.80 Years Ago - 1919 The Stonewall Baseball Club have awarded Albert Wright the prize of $5 donated by Mr. Jas Chambers. This was donated for the one having the best batting record, but as no record was taken, the prize was awarded to Wright, as being the most useful member of the team.60 Years Ago - 1939 Stonewall’s Oldest Resident SuccumbsFriday, September 22nd, saw the passing of Mr. Benjamin Spearman, Stonewall’s oldest resident and probably the oldest resident of Rockwood. Mr. Spearman was in his 95th year.He was born at North Oxford, Ontario, April 24th, 1845. At the time of the Fenian Raid in 1865 he enlisted. In 1873 he came to Manitoba by what was termed the Dawson route and his first employment was at Fort Garry, cooking for Professor DaVvson. For a time they explored along the route, and it was with his pick that the first Manitoba coal was uncovered, and he cooked the first meal the evening of the discovery.He was appointed turnkey for the jail, but in the spring joined a survey party for Edmonton.Back in Winnipeg, he decided to be his own boss, and go farming. He met a man named Campbell, who had come west with a large family, and settled in the Dundas district. He became interested in the family, and later homesteaded near them, and persuaded one daughter, Elizabeth, to become his wife.His first night in Dundas he slept under a cart with his boots for his pillow and piled grass for a windbreak.When married, Mr. and Mrs. Spearman made their home on what is now the Beckstead farm.Mrs. Spearman, having had a serious illness, he felt that medical attention was too far away, so he sold his farm and purchased the one now occupied by Mr. Alex McAdam.Later he took over the flour and feed business in Stonewall, and when he sold this he purchased a small cottage, but had not used it for long, when Mrs. Spearman passed away.They had adopted two girls. One Edna, became the wife of Mr. Elliott Crookshanks. She passed away several years ago. The other, Lily, became Mrs. Robt. Oughton, with whom Mr. Spearman made his home until his demise.He was a member of the United Church, which he attended faithfully until his strength began to fail him.
