Birthdays are always nice— for businesses as well as for people.Hudler - Moore Lumber Company opened its doors forbusiness 15 years ago in LaMarque, and has been agrowing and going concern ever since.In fact it has doubled in size, with a branch lumber yard in Alta Loma.In 1947 Herbert Hudler and three Moore brothers, B. C. Jr., David and Charles, formed the Hudler-Moore Lumber •Company and began construction in the spring of that year. That was also the year of thegreat ship explosion in TexasCity. The shock did extensive damage to La Marque as well as Texas City and the demand for building materials was great.The company was so busy taking care of customers, it took longer than they had anticipated to complete the construction of the office building and warehouses. Howeverit was completed the last week in September of 1947 so thatis considered the birthday for Hudler-Moore Lumber Company.The long planned and delayed formal opening kept beingshoved back by more pressing business, so the lumber company never did have a realopening date.The next 10 years after their opening, the city of La Marque began to expand withas much as 300 houses being built a year. Folks kept wondering when La Marque would stop growing.It leveled off a few years ago but has continued a steady normal growth, and Hudler-Moore has played an important part in the city and community’s development.Now with the 90 million dollar space laboratory on theoutskirts ot the city and rumors of more to come, it is more than likely that Hudler-Moore will be kept busy for many years to come.As business grew, so grewthe need for more help and it wasn't long after the business started that HerbertHudler was joined in his venture by a former business associate in West Texas. H. A. (Lindy) Slone became manager of the yard.Mr. Hudler's son, Billie,joined the organization following his graduation from college and managed the Alta Loma branch when it was firstbuilt in 1956. He is now anoutside salesman for the organization.The organization has grown from an original four to 16.Buying PowerThe company handles lumber, roofing, glass, floor tile,Bute Paints, Colorizerpaints, builder's hardware, power tools, Redwood lumber, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies and millwork.Labor DownSpendable earnings and purchasing power of the average factory production worker edged down in July from record June levers.The U.
