Pettis, of Providence, Rhode Island, who served as an officer in the First California Volunteer Infantry and in the First New Mexico Infantry, during the Civil War, and who keeps “tab, on New Mexico affairs, in a recent letter to this paper says:“Last week I had the pleasure of calling upon Miss Ascension Garcia, the young girl from New Mexico, concerning whom the Daily New Mexican had a paragraph stating that she was at school in this city. 1 found her in a good family, the head of which is a Grand Army man and an acquaintance of mine. She is in good hands, and will be well taken care of. We had a pleasant hour together, our conversation being conducted in the Spanish language, which was a pleasure to her as well as to myself. I showed her the article in the New Mexican which spoke of her returning to this city.‘‘1 am pleased to say that three families left this city last week to make their homes in the salubrious climate of New Mexico. There are others that are to follow. It is well known in this vicinity that I was a former resident of your Territory, and 1 am approached almost every day by parties anxious to know about the conditions in that part of our great country, and you may be assured that 1 answer all their questions to the best of my ability.”FORAFirst St Cathlt;
