the Social Whirl.MR. AND MRS. BASS ENTERTAIN.Mr. and Mrs. Eli Bass gave a reception, at their residence on south Centra! avenue, last evening, in honor of Mrs. Mary Burnsides, of Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Bass was assisted In receiving by her daughters, Alberta and Farabee. Fifty guests were present. Among the out-of-town guests were Mrs. Mary Burnsides, of Chicago, and Mrs. Mariah Holsinger, of Richmond. The house was beautifully adorned with cut flowers and the guests were entertained with a musical and literary program. J. L. Beard acted as master of ceremonies and also delivered the address of welcome. Mrs. Burnsides responded in a most pleasing manner. An Instrumental solo by Miss Farabee C. Bass was appreciated by all present, as she was repeatedly encored. Rev. Winfrey gave a short talk on his visit | to the Jamestown Exposition, Mrs. Alberta E. Fairfax sang a beautiful solo, and Rev. C. S. Brown gave a short talk on Race Progress. After 1^ the exercises, the guests were ln-|j vlted to the dining room, where a two course luncheon was served. The room was tastefully decorated Z with fall roses and evergreen and j the table with carnations, geran- t turns and other cut flowers. Thomas Rice was caterer and he was ably assisted by Percy S. Evans and CarlJ^ Day. ^ Mrs. Burnsides will leave for Chicago, Wednesday morning. It was twelve o'clock before the guests departed, all wishing Mrs. Burnsides a safe journey and Mr. and Mrs. Bass many more years of life and usefulness. a * * •as0cali
