Adolph Kloth, the pastor, “because past blessings will be called to memory. Memories of small beginnings and many hard struggles and difficulties are not beyond the reach of some of our older .people. And to all of us, old and young alike, God's benediction on these small beginnings is in evidence, for there have certainly been marks of progress down to and including our own day/'Celebration Replaces PicnicThis 30th anniversary celebration will take the place of the annual church picnic and all members and friends who customarily attend the picnic are invited to this occasion. Andersen made a mission trip to Penn Yan. That was the first Lutheran service conducted among these people. Pastor Andersen continued to come to Penn Yan at intervals up to the year 1891. By that time the group had grown considerably and for a number of years was served by ministers of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran church (a sister synod). Rev. Mr. Jacobsen from Lansingburg came here at quarterly intervals for some years. But then for some reason these visits ceased and for three or four years the little Lutheran group was without any church connection. Church Buys Building LotAfter these years during which immigrants had been coming in groups of 20 to 30, one particular man saw the pressing need of some kind of church agiliation and therefore, wrote to the president of the synod, the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The call for help was not left unheeded, but immediately, in the year 1909, Rev. Mr. Grill of Warren, Pa.t and Rev. Mr. Beck of Brooklyn came to Penn Yan in the dead of winter. On the 25th of April of the same year the president of the synod came here and at that time a church society was organized.*3 •The same summer Rev. Max Mathiesen was called and came U Penn Yan where he worked for two years. When he left for Denmark Rev. Lewis C. Larsen came here from Falmouth, Me. During his pastorate the work went forward. A couple of months after he came on the 22nd of Sept., 1912, the congregation was organized. On Jan. 28, 1917, the congregation was incorporated under the name, “St. Paul's Lutheran Church for Penn Yan and Vicinity. Services were held in the Church school quarters of the local Presbyterian church. The same year, 1917, the congregation sought membership in the synod and began to work on a piece of church property. A lot was purchased on Hamilton street through the gifts of members and friends, and in the year 1918 the present church home was finished. The church records show that there was steady growth during Mr. Larsen’s pastorate which lasted down to the year 1924.The same year Rev. C. B. Larsen of Worchcster, Mass., was called as pastor. He came and served the congregation until the fall of 1926. Many people were likewise brought into relationship with the church during his pastorate. It was also in his time that the beautiful altar was dedicated Rev. Mr. Larsen left in 1926 to take up a theological professorship at Trinity seminary, Blair, Neb.Build Parsonage in 1928In 1927 Rev. Hans P. Bcrthelsen of Philadelphia was called to he pastor. His work likewise was not in vain. Many names were added to the records the first years he was here, the word was preached and the sacraments were administered. During his pastorate the physical plant was greatly improved by the building of a spacious parsonage which building was dedicated in a formal ceremony on July 4, 1928. Rev. Mr. Bcrthelsen found it necessary to retire from the active ministry in 1937 but chose to remain in this community as a member of the congregation. He is still active and known to many. The same year, 1937, Rev. N. T.Neesgaard was called from Detroit, Mieh. He served the congregation for five years up to the time of the present pastor's arrival. The records also show that some members were added during his pastorate. Mr. Neesgaard tendered his resignation in the early spring of this year! Shortly after Rev.
