Charles Hoyt, Civil War Veteran, Is 89 TodayCharles H. Hoyt is 89 years'old today. He was born at Brownsville, Ohio, September 17, 1843. lie came to Kansas in 1856, stopping for. a short time in St. Louis. There he took a steam boat up the Missouri river to Kansas City and came from there to Lawrence by team and wagon.Lorenzo Hoyt and Emma Hoyt, his father ana mother, conducted a boarding house, north of the present postoffice, for many years, it was known as the Durfee House. For thirty-seven years Charlie Hoyt was in the railway mail service. His runs were on the Southern Kansas,, the . Union Pacific from Kansas City to Denver and from Kansas City to La Junta on the Santa Fe.He was a charter member ofWashington Post, G. A. R., and is the sole survivor of those whose names appear on the charter. For two years he has been blind and is unable to walk. But he is otherwise in good health, has a . good appetite and is thankful for'.his good home and the many old'friends who come to see him. Many friends and neighbors called to see him this afternoon. He is also grateful to the government for its generous treatment of the Civil war veterans.His hearing is ,not good. His wife is in good health, though she will be 85 years old oh February 6, 1933.
