NATURAL GAS WAS DISCOVERED IN THIS CITY 23 YEARSAGO. I fI gItHartford City Company Formed After Discovery of Big Producer at Eaton.While running the records at the court house, in quest of information I for the making of an abstract, James I T. Trant came across a bit of interesting information, which he gives the I News for publication. IIt shows that the first gas company | was organized in this city September 29, 1886, which, according to the Blackford county history, is some time I prior to the drilling cf the first well. I The company was known as the Hart-1 ford City Natural Gas company and, after its formation, remained in business a number of years, finally being taken over by the Crescent company, which is still in existence.Shortly before 1886 gas had been I found at Eaton, where the first well in this section of the state had been put down. Following this discovery steps were taken in this city to organize a company to drill for the precious fuel and the Hartford City I company was the result. The first] well was put down just east of the L. E. W. station and came in a big producer. Others followed and in almost every instance big wells were found. That was twenty-three years ago and today there is not a valuable ; well left in the county. People, with a j lack of prudence and forethought, I leased thousands of acres of ground and allowed immense quantities of the wealth producing element to be | piped a Way with the result that the | supply was finally completed exhaust-1 ed and the days of cheap fuel ended. | The records in the county recorder's | office show that the first gas company in this city had the following for its stockholders: lt;IJ.
