Hoosac School Opens MondayWith 101 Record EnrollmentBy JANE ARESONHOOSICK, N.Y. — An aura of newness surrounds Hoosac School, the 78-year-old Episcopal boarding school for boys, founded In 1889 by the Rev. Dr. Edward Dudley Tlbblts here. And the newness doesn’t take away from the established traditions or the enduring values carried forward from Dr. Tibbits’ term by the Rev. James L. Whitcomb, the Rev. Meredith B. Wood, Dr. Roger G. Cooley and the Rev. Clinton H. Blake Jr.The feeling comes with the start of Donn D. Wright’s second year as headmaster. He is the second layman to hold the position. The first was Dr. Cooley.New additions or even a new look are in enrollment, dormitory space, courses of study, faculty members, another soccer field, language laboratory equipment, the gift of a bronze owl and even road improvements.A total of 101 boys, the largest student body in the history of the school, will start classss Monday. Recently completed Pitt Mason Hall will be a student dormitory which contains faculty apartments. Music and art have been added to the curriculum.New faculty members include the Rev. and Mrs. Herbert Sanderson, formerly of St. Peter’s Church in Bennington. Sanderson will be chaplain and guidance director. Mrs. Sanderson will be school organist. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Balser, graduates of Syracuse University, willteach history and art, respectively. Richard Reese, a graduate of Kenyon College who holds a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago, will teach mathematics and English. A native of Cuba, the new Spanish teacher, Jorge H. Suarez, holds a bachelor of arts degree from Havana Institute and a law degree from the University of Havana. He recently completed graduate studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, N.J.Returning to the school with Mrs. Crosby and his daughter as director of admissions and English teacher is H. Ashton Crosby who has been teaching at the Rectory School In Pom-fret, Conn. and studying at the University of Connecticut.Facing the entrance of the Memorial Dining Hall is a 400-pound sculpture of a bronze owl in flight with a wing spread of seven feet. The sculpture by Henry Mitchell of Philadelphia, Pa., was recently presented to the school by an anonymous donor. The owl has long been significant in the traditions ofHoosac.Dr. Tibbits called the school Hoosac, an old Indian name meaning “Valley of the Owl.’’ The original site was on N.Y. 7 at Hoosick Four Corners, but the present location is the 600-acre hilltop property off N.Y. 22, former home of the founder to which the school moved in 1952.Hoosac has survived depressions, fires and wars but has accumulated a wealth of traditions, not least of which is the Boars Head and Yule Log Pageant presented at the start of each Christmas vacation. Dress rehearsal is open for the townspeople, and the main performance is for parents, trustees and invited guests.According to the school, it emphasizes sound academic standards with the development of other aspects of a boy’s character through student participation in work and play.Newness is apparent in many phases, but traditions remain. For those visiting the Hoosac campus, there is a pervading impression of the school’s motto, “Deus Regit.”Legal NoticesBENNINGTON DEMOCRAT CAUCUS Democrat voters of the Town of Bennington are hereby notified and warned that a caucus will be held at the Bennington Court House on Wednesday, September 20, at 8 00 p.m. To transact j the following business: *j-Tfi nominate and elect a TownCommittee. j2.
