ONTARIO INDIANS IN♦STATE OF PANIC 11Report of Cannibal Indian Abroad Sends Squaws and Childien to ('over.Fort William, Ont., Sept. 12 - The Indians of the district are in a state of panic and are keeping close to their homes as the result of the report that a “windigo” or cannibal Indian is abroad in the brush. The terror is not so much of the physical harm which may result from a meeting with the man, but it is a survivalIof the old superstition which credits; Indians with “windigo” with super-} natural powers.Sunday last, several squaws and jtheir children saw a stranger com-ing along the Grand Trunk railway ii tracks near where they have their encampment. They were alarmed ! at his appearance and ran to cover.! No attempt was made to return to ; the camj) that night, but the next ! day, accompanied by section men,| the Indians returned and found the i camp stripped of ail valuables andfood. The intruder had disappeared. An Indian went “windigo” north of Lac ut some time ago, but later was seen near here.‘
