Estes BRUNSWICK, Sept. 13.—A Diamond Jubilee, commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of founding: of Saint Boniface Catholic Church to be held here several : days next week, will open Sunday ,! morning with the Most Rev. 'j Charles Hubert Leblond, Bishdp ot [i the St. Joseph diocese, celebrating • a pontifical high mass, assisted by ,i the local church pastor, the Rev. j Fr. John J. Groetsch, and visiting1 clergymen.Following the service at the j church Sunday, the Bishop ana visiLing clergy will be honored J gucstg of the parish at a banquet / to be served in the Brunswick High School auditorium. Other : services and events of the Jubilee 11 will include a pontifical mass ‘ Monday . morning for deceased members of St. Boniface parish, a reception at the school auditoriumin the evening with prominentspeakers, a concert by the Brunswick Civic Band and vocal selections by the Male Choir of St. : Boniface Church * and, Tuesday ! evening, a slide-illustrated trave-! logue by the Rev. Giles Strub ot i Chicago at St. Boniface Hall.In i860 when Brunswick, a young and flourishing river port, was showing promise of becoming an important settlement, the Rev. \ Fr. John Hogan arrived in this section from St, Louis and founded the parish of St. Boniface. After a few years. Father Hogan I was appointed first Bishop of the | diocese of St. Joseph and the local parish became a mission. It remained without a resident pastor for about 20 years when the Franciscan Fathers wore placed in charge. Members of the order directed the lift of the parish until 1914, when the Rev. Father Rich.-1 ardson,' the first secular priest of i the parish, was sent to Bruns-I .wick.The first church building was erected in 1870. It was a small, frame structure valued, according to old records, at 84.000 including the interior furnishings. The Observe 75thDiamond JubiteeIIpresent church, a .840,000 modern j brick building, was built m 1902. [ There have been other nig.ll jlights in the history of St. Boni-;face Church. In recent years a! modern school and rectory were; built just west of the church. Last Palm Sunday, April 14, 1935, a; new pipe organ, the gift of Wil-i liam Gerhardt and Mr. and Mrs.] E. J. Tschann in memory of thejGerhardt family and Albert .S.iHolland, was dedicated and conse-icration ceremonies were conducted’ at the church, August 16, for two) new bells given by the late WiL; liam Wittmer as a memorial to; the Wittmer family. The bells are pitched to harmonize with the first bell to sound a full peal asthey call the faithful to worship.The family name of Strub long has been associated with, the history of St. Boniface Church -and with the business and civic life of: Brunswick. On Tuesday morning, as a part of the Diamond Jubilee j •program, two brothers, the Rev. Giles. Strub and the Rev. Celestine Strub of .Chicago, 111., will celebrate their Silver Sacerdotal Jubilee—the 25th anniversary of their entrance to the Franciscan Order. They are the sons of the late Benjamin and Victoria Strub and in their youth, before entering the priesthood, they were known as Leo and Vincent Strub. The Rev. Martin Strub will preach the festi-: val sermon.Following the mass, the Jubilar-xans, the Bishop of the diocese and clergy will be guests at a banquet to be served by women of the parish, •Other visiting clergy who win assist in the Jubilee services are the Rev. P. C. Vatter of Moberly, the Rev. B. Dubbcring, the Rev. F Ernst and the Rev. Herbert Faris-chon.A dance and reception at the city hall Friday night will be the closing feature of the celebration.
