Harbor Springs, Mich., Sept. 9.Andrew Mackatepenesse, called ChiefBlackbird, of the Ottawas, firstmaster of the village of Uttie Traverse, many ats a government interpreter, author of Indian text and educated at the Yj*silanti normalcollege, died here Monday night ofsenile insanity, aged about 90. He leaves an aged wife, a full-bloodedEnglish woman.He was married in Toledo. His wife came here with him before the railroads were built.He also leaves one daughter and several sons. He owned most of the farm on which the Wequetonsing golf grounds are located, and a small home in town.The last years of the aged chiief’s life were tilled with disappoint me! For years he had been the historianof the tribe, and up to the last fewj years his remarkable memory hadj stood him in good stead, and in addition to the Indian dictionaries and! oilier Indian text books which he hadj published had put much time and j thought upon manuscript of the In-j dian legends and folklore for which the Ottawa Indians are noted.| The work was one of the most com-j plete of the kind ever compiled, butj when the old chief was ready to sendit to the publishers he could not findit; it had been stolen from his residence at Harbor Springs. The loss was almost more than he could bear, and embittered his last years. He was well known through the Grandrl raverse region.
