FairviewOutlaws reign as undisputed champions of the Wheat Belt Baseball League.They defeated the pick of the crop 5-2 in the annual All-star game Sunday and were awarded the league championship afterGrande Prairie Eskimos failed to field a club for the third gameof the best-of-five final.Individual league trophy winners were given special acclaim and presented with their silverware at the all-star contest played before 400 chilly yet enthusiastic fans.Buck Lund of Fairview, who hit at a .413 clip during the season, walked with the leading batting trophy. Joe Weremy, playing-coach of Peace River Stamneders who chalked up a 5-0 win-loss record on the mound, received the leading pitcher award.inDale Stokke toted off the home run award with a league high of seven circuit drives. The most valuable player award was presented to John Doucette of Father Pirates and Vic Tardif,also of Father, received the rookie of the year award. Father Loran of Fairview was named coach of the year.League commissioner Spud Steinke of Fairview presented the awards. The winners were named by balloting by team coaches.Tie Outlaws, who started the season rather slow and picked up speed on the homestretch, got six hit pitching from a duo of hurlers to hand the ’stars theloss.Jim Fox, winning pitches took over for brother Kenny, in the fifth inning and only surrendered one run the rest of the way. Each were tagged for three hits andAwarded Final Seriesbetween them gained five strikeouts.The key blow in the game wasa three-run homer by Tony Doll in the seventh inning which produced the final score. Weremysurrendered the homer and wascharged with the loss for the ’stars.Weremy relieved starter Doucette after five innings and Kenny Gall of Peace River took over Weremy for the last two innings.The 'stars made a last-ditch attempt in the bottom of the ninth to pull the game out of the fire. They scored one run and then loaded the bases with two out. However, the rally petered out at this point.The trio of ’star pitchers allowed only five hits and fanned nine batters.The all-star game was organized last week because of the lateness of the season and theinadvisability of further postponement.All-star players on hand forthe encounter were Don Richards,Garth Roberts of Grande Prairie, Stan Digout, John Czuy, andWeremy of Peace River, Doucette of Falher, Chuck Stojan, Willie Jackson andMelWoldofSexsmith Rainiers, Greg Walker and Gerry Walker of Beaverlodge Royals. Several other players were named to the squad but were not at the game.Meanwhile, Steinke awarded Fairview the league championship Sunday when the Eskimos did not show up to play the tird did not show up to play the third game at Grande Prairie. The Outlaws worked . out on the Grande Prairie field and when their opposition did not show up they headed back to Fairview to take on the 'stars. Steinke said a league meeting will take place at Fairview in a week or so.
