Goodtime I to give peace marchers a lift across the Sandusky BayBy JOHN PRZVBYSStaff WriterThe Sandusky-based Goodtime I has come to the rescue of a group of persons who are walking across the country to protest nuclear weapons. The Goodtime’s participation in The Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament will solve a major problem for march organizers: how to cross Sandusky Bay, now that the oldBay Bridge has been closed and pedestrian travel is prohibited on the neighboring Edison Memorial Bridge.About 500 to 650 march participants are scheduled to enter Ottawa County today on their eight-month trek to Washington. DC.Until as recently as Friday, it looked as though the lack of a bridge to cross might force marchers to make a considerable detour in their route. Now, thanks to the 117-foot, 360-passenger Goodtime, the40 Today!iiHappyBirthdayV VElla7Mae!From44The Stone St. Gang99march is alive and we'll, with no detours in sight.Dennis Wieber, the Good-time's captain, said Saturdaythat march organizers, searching for a way to ferry walkers across the bay, asked if the Goodtime might be available.LocalsThe Hickory's breakfast special $1.79 Sat. Throughout the summer, the Goodtime made daily trips from Sandusky to Kelleys Island andPut-In-Bay.The Goodtime now runs only on weekends and isn't scheduled to operate Tuesday. So, Wieber said, the impromptu Tuesday run is “not really that big a deal for us.”Details of exactly where the marchers will be picked up and let off still have not been set, Wieber said. However, the marchers probably will get on the boat at Marblehead and be let off at the Jackson Street Dock indowntown Sandusky.Meanwhile, the marchers were scheduled to leave their encampment in Oregon, Ohio thismorning to head westward toward the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station near Port ClintonLater this afternoon, the marchers will be driven from Davis-Besse to Bergman Orchards in Danbury Township, where they will spend the night. On Monday, the present schedule calls for marchers to be transported from Bergman Orchards back to Davis-Besse tocontinue the walk where they left off. The marchers also plan to spend Monday night at Bergman Orchards. On Tuesday, the itinerary calls for the group to enter Erie County and follow U.S. 6 to Osborn Park in Huron Township, where they will spend Tuesday night. The march began March 1 in Los Angeles but temporarily disbanded two weeks later following the financial collapse of its founding organization. However, marchers regrouped and, two weeks later, resumed their trek.
