One of the most hopeful items is a report from, *Michigan that extracts from certain kinds of mushrooms showisome effect in retarding or halting the growth of cancer in* • ■ » .mica. That's the report of just one research laboratory, andAit deals with mice—not men--but the public has learned that: - • ‘ .from such beginnings may come great benefits for mankind._ . . •A report from the National Council of Churches says thatsix out of every 10 persons in the United States is listed as a/ . *church member.-The population has been growing rapidly,but according .to this report church membership has been**«growing even faster, and church construction in 1954 hit an allrtime high. Population figures show how many people; church membership figures show what kind of people.iOn a local level, some of the most welcome news is the reopening of textile mills in the eastern part of Lumberton.VkThis comes under the heading of expected things, but, as in the* ( icase of the opening of tobacco markets each year, expectation adds to enjoyment. The difficulties experienced at these»%miils in recent months make it all the more satisfying to seer «them back in business,TThe tobacco markets have been keeping up high price averages, based on this season's quality crop. The shortened selling day has been a handicap, but optimism has been ex*§ ipressed this week that the regular sales schedule may be resumed next week. If this turns out to be the case, it will bring*relief to many fawners who have Been unable to get their tobacco on the warehouse floors, or have had to take it tosome other market than the one they normally use.►» V *Announcement was made this week that the Robeson County Rescue Unit now is fully paid for. This gives the county, its Civil Defense and police organizations, a.piece ofmobile equipment that can be taken anywhere that need for* *it arises. The project was undertaken before the hurricane season began, but recent storms threatening the Carolinas coast*i » » » tal area make the equipment seem more valuable than ever, a* something to have on hand in case of catastrophe.Schools in Robeson County have opened as usual. Many young persons may question whether that is good news, but itdoes look like something to be thankful for, because it is not*yet certain that public schools will open at all next year. Robe-. . • ■son, with its complex race situation, is one of the worst places*to have a controversy ovev segregation, and therefore is one of the ,best places to have schools reopen as usual.It was a bloody Labor Day weekend in most of-The nation, North Carolina included, but “Bloody Robeson” got by without a traffic fatality. This is highly creditable to the people of this county and to law enforcement officers, because the normal hazards, including a network of major highways and secondary roads, were all here, plus the special hazards of increased traffic and exceptionally wet weather.
