For many years the late Dr.S. B. L. Penrose told the Whitman story of pioneer sacrifice and serv-ive, of the massacre, and of the Reverend Cushing Sells who vowed to build a perpetual memorial to his friend and co-worker Marcus Whitman. In 1859 this memorial. Whitman seminary, was chartered by the territorial legislature and in 1882 it became Whitman college with Alexander J. Anderson as its first president. Dr. Penrose became president in 1894.The Whitman story has been told in succeeding years by the late nnnn Dean W. ft. Davis,_by Allen H.
