An endownment fund of one million dollars will maintain the property, to be known as the Virginia Robinson Gardens.The acreage, the setting each June of Hie Hollywood Bowl Patroness party, became the property of Mrs. Robinson andher husband, the late HarryWinchester Robinson, son of the Robinson’s department store 'founder, back in 1911. That was the year they had returned from a three year residence in Jndia and decided to build a home on Eldon Way. Their in-itial five acres of Beverly Hills land was being newly developed from open countryside. To complement the gardens and to accommodate extra guests, a pool house was added in 1924 to the residence which Mrs. Robinson’s architect father had designed.Desiring a typical California garden, Mrs. Robinson bad originally planted olive trees, pomegranates and persimmons. These did well for a while but within ten years all were gone for want of a hotter, drier climate.Then she started to collect tropical plants and with the help of Charles Gibhs Adams, obtained many plan Is from the government.
