In Berlin tourney finals—Joe's Citgo takes titleBERLIN—Joe’s Citgo, the regular season and playoff champion of the Berlin Men’s Softball League, capped off the campaign with success int he Berlin Invitational Tournament Saturday night.Unloading a 19-hit barrage, which featured two home runs by Donald Reid and a bases-loaded shot by Jerry Weathersby, the Joe’s Citgo team overpowered Ryan in the finals, 17-3.Ryan had edged Jennings Fence, 8-7, earlier in the evening to earn a spot in the title clash.Don Reid, who had belted two homers early ir. the contest, was walked intentionally in the fourth inning to load the bases, and then Weathersby promptly cleared them with a blast across the road.Joe’s Citgo scored runs in every inning, including four in the first, second and fourth.ritz captures#•gold medalSpitz, the “old man” of the group at 22 and competing in his last race, swam the butterfly leg on the winning men’s 400-meter medley relay, which this time was anchored by Jerry Heidenreich of Dallas, Texas. With Mike Stamm of San Diego, Calif., and Tom Bruce of Sunnyvale, Calif., they carved out a world record 3:48.2.It was the fourth American gold medal in swimming on the final day of the competition and the fourth world record. Earlier, Karen Moe of Santa Clara, Calif., took the world record to 2:15.6 in leading a Yank 1-2-3«wppn in thp 200-meter butter-springboard diving gold by Micki King of Pontiac, Mich. In all, the American “kids” took part in a record setting orgy that included 32 world and 84 Olympic marks.The four swimming golds, two silvers and two bronze,plus Black’s silver in the 200meter dash, a bronze inwaterpolo and a silver by diver Richard Rydze of Pittsburgh boosted the American medals total to 71 —eight more than Russia and 23 more than East Germany, which has won four track and field golds to trail West Germany in that sport by one gold.It was the 24th win against only three defeats for the power-hitting team—13-3 during the regular season schedule, plus five v victories in the league playoffs and six in the invitational tournament.Jackie Satterfield and Denis Reid both collected three hits, including doubles, and James Reid stroked a pair of doubleswhile Jackie Folds and Steve Glasscock (winning pitcher) smashed two singles apiece.Rounding out the attack for Joe’s Citgo were £ruce Paynewith a double and Ernie Drake and Dudley Allen with a singleapiece.Billy Abercrombie and Bobby Abercrombie both swatted a single and double to lead Ryan. The only other Ryan safety was a double by Don Ellis.In Saturday’s first game, Billy Abercrombie collected three singles, Bobby Abercrombie had a pair of singles, Buck Jones cracked a single and double, Ellis a tripie and Danny Wright and Jody Huddleston both slugged a single for Ryan.rnLFor Jennings Fence, Asa Brandon homered and singled, Keith Norris doubled and singled, Charles Jennings and Jimmy Cadle belted two singles each and Allen Jennings came through with a three-bagger.
