MARK’S LUTHERAN HAS ITS GOLDEN JUBILEE.Celebration Sunday, Monday and lt;Tuesday—Sketch of the Old Congregation.£JI£I1It is half a century since a devotedlittle band of worshipers organized jSt. Mark’s Lutheran congregation atSheldon, this county, and the golden jubilee of the church was appro- ( priately celebrated by special services j * on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. 1 | St. Mark's congregation was organized in 1856, and its first members were Frederick Thiele, Conrad Thiele, Christopher Heckler, Thomas Heckler, G. M. Springer, Henry Thiele and Adolph Fox, sr. Of this number, Messrs. Conrad Thiele and G. M. Springer alone survive. The first church building was a blockhouse, which is still standing two and one-half miles north of the present church, and it was built upon land donated for that purpose by Frederick Thiele and Christopher Heckler. This was used until 1870, when the congregation purchased one-half acre of land and erected a frame church building, which is now used as a schoolhouse. Later the congregation bought additional land, and in 1S8S erected the present brick church building, and during the past year has erected a residence for its pastor. Until 1905 it had been the custom for the pastor to act as school teacher, but last year G. F. Depping wras called as teacher for the school.The first pastor of the congregation was Rev. H. Herzberger, and others in succession have been Pastor Baessler, Rev. Adam J. Buntenthal, Rev. C. A. Herbst, Rev. E. A. Born, Rev. J. Schermer, Rev. J. Pohl, Rev. J. Meyer, Rev. J. 0. Krueger and Rev. F. W. Lcewenstein, the latter the present pastor, who has been in charge of the congregation since September, 1904.The congregation includes a total membership of 274 souls, comprising fifty families and including 67 voting members, thirteen of whom are from a single family. There are forty-six school children. The church officers are: Elders—C. E. Herbst, J. Dittman. Trustees—J. Springer, Carl Thiele. Deacons—George Springer, Jacob Young, Michael Lipp. Treasurer— (1 Gustave Lipp. Secretary—Ernst Springer. School board—WilliamHuelsemeyer, M.
