Sept. 7. Th* “All-American” this year boasts a never-before heard oi price of $670,000 to increa.se it-sjead s “the world’s richest horse race.”Ten two-year-olu.s representing five different states qualified for the finals oi the “AlMmerican” out of a field of 125 hop; fuls last weekend Unl.ke 1969. the year of Easy Jet, 1970 has no dominant contender as yet. but these ten represent probably the finest crop of two-year old quarter horses that have ever existed.Richard Tnompson. general manager of Ruidoso Downs, says he anticipates * at least two or three thousand more spectators at the Downs on Labor Day than last year, when the crowd numbered 10,500. “We may even top the all-time record attendance of 14 500 set in 1968.’’ he added.Three other important stakes races are on tap for the popular “6-day wekend”. On Friday. Sept. 4, “The Brigand Handicap at 870 yards will be the featured event, contested by both quarter horses and thoroughbreds, running for a purse of $5,000 added. Saturday, Sept. 5 brings about the twentieth running of the “Ruidoso Thoroughbred Futurity”, for two-year-olds, which carries a total pur.se oi $61,5C0. The seventeenth running of the “Ruidoso Mile, for three-year-olds and upwards will be highlighted Sunday. Sept. 6. and will feature a purse of $10,000 in added money.Also many outer leature events were scheduled on the preceding days before the “All-American” such as the two features which were written for Wednesday, Sept. 2. The tenth race on Wednesday' s program was named in honor of the Sitzmark Chalet Motel, in Ruidoso, one of the loveliest spots to stay while visiting in Rui-clo o.
