Devil cage hopes brighterAfter two losing seasons, new coach Steve Thomas will attempt to turn things around for the Ironwood girls’ varsity basketball program this fall.Blessed with five seasoned letter winners, all of whom received considerable playing time a year ago, Thomas’ chances for at least a .500 season would appear to look good. However, the Ironwood girls are ' playing in the tough A-B-C Conference, led by traditionally strong Marquette and a strong Escanaba team.Thomas has three starters returning from last season, all seniors. They are Maria Aukee, a 5-10 senior forward; Jackie McMullin, a 5-6 senior guard, and Tina Comparin, a 5-4 senior guard. The veteran of the group will be McMullin, who will be back for her third year as a starter.McMullin should be one of Iron-wood’s top offensive standouts, oft her performances the past two seasons.Joining them will be Stephanie Byrns, a 5-10 junior forward, and Stephanie Dudra, a 5-4 senior guard. Both saw considerable playing time last year.Others filling varsity spots are: Lee Ann McQuiggan, 5-8 junior; Carrie Hewitt, 5-6 junior; Sue Dudra, 5-6 sophomore, and Sarah Thomas, 5-10 sophomore.Thomas has seen some positives and negatives in his team's workouts so far. ‘‘We should be a good defensive team, but we need to develop more offense. We have been working hard, but we will have to. Our conference is always strong.Thomas, a 1956 graduate of Luther L, Wright High, himself, points to Marquette and Escanaba as the teams to beat in the A-B-C Conference.Ironwood will open its schedule with a non-league test at Bessemwer Tuesday, Sept. 6.REMAINING SCHEDULE:Thursday, Sept. 8 — Kingsford, away, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Sept. 13 — Ontonagon, home, 7 p.m.Thursday, Sept. 15 —West Iron Co.,away, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Sept. 20 - Gladstone, away, 6:30 p.m.Thursday, Sept. 22 — Menominee, home, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Sept. 27 - Wakefield, away, 7:30 p.m.Thursday, Sept. 29 ~ Stephenson, away, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 4 — Bessemer, home, 7 p.m.Thursday, Oct. 6 - Escanaba, away, 6:30 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 11 - Marquette, away, 6:30 p.m.Thursday, Oct. 13 - Kingsford, home, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 18 — Ontonagon, away, 6:30 p.m.Thursday, Oct. 20 - West Iron Co., home, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 25 - Gladstone, home, 5:45 p.m.Thursday, Oct, 27 - Menominee, away, 7 p.m.Tuesday, Nov. 1 — Stephenson, home, 7 p.m.Friday, Nov. 4 — Escanaba, home,6 p.m.Tuesday, Nov. 8 - Wakefield, home, 7 p.m.Thursday, Nov. 10 - Marquette, home, 6:30p.m.
