Mentz Sr.’s home when theParent Teacher-Associationthe educational center where many of the presentprofessional and business leaders in Hammond received part of their education she thinks of the happy hours ofMrs. Mentz was president of the organization for two terms and was concerned about the welfare of the students. “I visited the school often, sheadded and saw the need of some of the students. It was then during the heart of the depression that we worked diligently to provide milk and sandwiches. Mrs; Robert McBride a neighbor and fellow4ePTA worker helped in this cause” A lunch program was instigated through the work of Mrs. Mentz and assistants. Aid was solicited and through the generosity of the merchants progress was made. 'During this era also the* school ground was landscaped and shrubbery planted.School work was not new to Mrs.Mentz who moved to Hammond with her husband andson Henry Mentz Jr. in 1925. They built the family residence, the spacious brick home at 510 West Morris, she now occupies. Mrs. Mentz was graduated from Louisiana State Normal, now Northwestern State College in Natchitoches and she attended Peabody Teachers College. At the time of her marriage to Mr. Mentz at Forrest City, Ark. she had the distinction of being the first lady principal of an elementary school in thatstate.An active member of Grace Memorial Church in Hammond Mrs. Mentz was in charge of the planting in the church yard for nearly ten years. ‘‘I actually worked pushing, raking and planting,”said Mrs. Mentz. It was during this time and under Mrs. Mentz’ supervision that aboutone hundred small azaleas were donated by the late Mr. James F. McCarroll and planted in the church yard. She added, “the late Mrs. W./ •H. Brent Sr. often helped mewith this project.”This leader did not confine her interests to church and school work for she showed her patriotism during World War I when she served as Woman’s Chairman for Liberty Bond Sales in Pike County, Miss., and again in World War II served as Woman’s Chairman for Tangipahoa parish for Victory Bond Sales.In recent years Mrs. Mentz, a charter member of Care-At-Home organization and one of the first officers hasgiven invaluable assistanceduring the years. This is another organization where help to needy school childrenis its prime purpose.Flower and vegetationculture in her garden plot has long been another enjoyment for Mrs. Mentz. Found here are tomatoes, okra, peppers and beans. Her recipe files contain excellent recipes for fig and pear preserves and pickles.The story would not be complete without telling that five grandchildren have held a big share in the allotment of Mrs. Mentz’ hours.
