Although Jupiter and j Mercury, two of the planets, and Reg-ulus, a star of the first magnitude, were, near the sun at the time and i• k icould be viewed ak places where the : eclipse; became total, the light of the sun was too bright here to permit observers to see these other heavenly bodies.
