known.TUB LUTHERANS.No one of the various religious denominations of our city has had a more steady and healthful growth than the i German Luthorans; and, as they will, to-morrow, dedicate another beautiful Templo to the service of the Most High, we avail ourselves of the fitting opportunity thus offered to lay betsre our readers a brief sketch of the progress of Lutheranism in Fort ayne, and a description of the new church.]1THE FIRST LUTHERAN CONGREGATION,• «Iii this county, was organized in the • year 18:31, and was composed of about i twenty German families who had settled in this city and immediate vicinity. The Rev. Mr. Huber, who was the first regular pastor, labored here successfully until the year 1839, when ho was succeeded by the ltev. Mr. Wyncken, who remained until 184-3, the latter being assisted by the Rev. Mr. Jensen during i ono year of that time.THE FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH.The first Church erected by the Lu-theraus in this city, was a small frame structure, built in the year 1840, uponthe kite of the present (St. Paul’s)I 1Church, on Barr Street* Here they ;worshipped until the year 1846. Up to this time the increase in the congregation had been encouraging, but notremarkably rapid. |GROWTH OF THE DENOMINATION. ,? \In 1845, Lutheranism received » j groat impetus by the arrival in this jcity of the Rev. William Sihler, D. , 6D., who assumed the pastorate of St. . ( Paul’s Church in the beginning ! of that year. Uu. StiiLKR brought to j th© discharge of t he laborious task of 1building up a new and feeble church, i■ • i| • • 1 • ■» • . t Ia vigorous and welL disciplined intel- i loot, richly stored with theologic and ! ^ classic lore. Possessed of a firm belief !in, and a deep love for the doctrines of his Church, and zealous for their prop- i ,agation, ho at once addressed himself with vigor to the great work before him. Under his acceptable ministrations the old church soon proved to be too small for the rapidly inoreasing congregation, and, therefore, a new and more commodious edifice became a necessity. Accordingly in the years 1846-47 the Barr Street church was erected. This answered the.purpose for which it was built very well until the year 1858, when it was found that the congregation had a gain outgrown its place of worship, and the church was considerably enlarged. Then again, in 1862, it was enlarged to its present proportions.THE SCHOOLS.Recognizing the great truth that a proper education of the mind is secondary in importance only to the education of the heart, we find our Lutherans giving early attention to this important subject. The first school house, (we are not certain but that a school was started earlier,) was built on the same lot as, and near the church, in the year 1847, and was placed in charge of Geo. Wolf. But as with tho church so withthe school. The small beginning here, ! 1 like that of the church, has grown with the toaxch of time, until the little school of one or two classes and one teacher has been developed into several splendid institutions, with nearly a dozen instructors, seven departments, twice as many classes and a thousand j scholars.
