You will listen to many people tell you many things during your schooling and to decide what theories and what lines of analysis you believe are true, it is important you have information backing up either your reasons for agreement or disagreement. A library should provide the bulk of this information. At Lawrence High School the library is not adequate, at least not adequate in providing the information 1 (Rob Seaver) need to back up what I say. And if the library is not adequate for my needs, it is not unreasonable to assume that the library is also not meeting the needs of other people at the school, students and faculty alike. In fact, I know of many students and faculty members who are not satisfied with the condition of the Lawrence High library. The library is critically important in the educational process, and by the end of my report I am sure you will realize the need for improvement of the Lawrence High library.THE ONLY LIBRARIES I visited that had adequate fundingwere the Shawnee Mission schools. Both of the Topeka schoolscomplained of poor funding. Shawnee Mission Northwest library has the best funding. This year their budget is $17,000. Last year, their initial year as a school, they had an unlimited library budget. Their allotment of nearly $11 a student is the highest of any school I visited. This is the first year Shawnee Mission North library has ever had a fixed budget. Their $12,000 budget represents an allotment of nearly $0 per student. Topeka High library has a low $8,500 budget, but even this budget is better than the budget for Lawrence High library, for no audio-visual material is paid for in the Topeka High library budget. Topeka West library budget isin the same condition as the Lawrence High library budget—poor. Not only do all these schools have better libraries than Lawrence High, but, excluding Northwest, they all have better football teams, too!
