Mass Climaxes Celebration Of Archdiocese’s 150th AnniversaryThree archbishops embraced Cincinnati's ne'w Auxiliary and an overflow congregation applauded the promulgation of the sixth Archdiocesan Synod at a Mass ot thanksgiving Oct. 23 marking the 150th anniversary ot the establishment ol the archdiocese.Archbishop Paul F. Leibold and retired Archbishop Karl J. Alter warmly greeted Auxiliary Archbishop Nicholas T Elko at his formal reception, which took place at the beginning of the Mass.Also greeting the new Auxiliary was Pope Paul's representative in the U.S., Archbishop Luigi Raimondi Archbishop Raimondi, who was principal concelebrant of the Mass along with Archbishop Leibold and Archbishop Elko, made a dramatic arrival at St. Peter in Chains cathedral just before 11 a.m. after his plane from Washington was delayed at Cincinnati by heavily overcast skies.The procession of clergy and bishops into the cathedral was delayed 20 minutes as a result of his late.arrival.Taking part in the ceremonies also were Bishop Richard H Ackerman of Covington. Archbishop George J Biskup of Indianpolis, Auxiliary Bishop William N. Cosgrove of Cleveland, Bishop John A. Donovan of Toledo, Bishop Clarence E. Elwell of Columbus, Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann of Cleveland, Bishop Edward A. McCarthy of Phoenix, Bishop James W. Malone of Youngstown, Byzantine-rite Bishop Emil J. Mihalik of Parma and retired Bishop George J. Rehring of Toledo.Applause broke out in the cathedral when Archbishop Leibold announced the official promulgation of the 11 documents of Synod '71 He signed thepromulgation decree at the cathedral high altar and Father Gerald E. Bensman, general secretary of the Synod, also signed as official witness and read the decree to the congregation.Some two dozen priests appointed as Synod officials stood to express their affirmation, of the decree, and laughter rippled through the cathedral when Archbishop Leibold invited any “heroic dissenter to speak out and none did so.In the Offertory procession, 10 persons represented various aspects ot the Church in the archdiocese and its history U Quirk McGrath and Frank Elardo carried lighted candles; Mrs. Josephine Marino and Mrs. Mary Robisch brought chalice, wine and water; bearing ciboria with hosts to be consecrated were Brother John Thilmont of Mt. Alverno, Sister Mareelliari Walter of the Precious Blood Sisters, Kristine Otto and Robert David.Dr. Russell Hannen, chairman of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, brought the book of Synod '71 documents in the Offertory procession, and Monsignor Henry J. Klocker, director of the Archdiocesan Missions Office, brought a symbol of the Mission Sunday collection, taken up Oct. 17 as part of the archdiocese's expression of gratitude for the first 150 years of its history. ’In his sermon at the sesquicentennial Mass, Archbishop Leibold referred to the three reasons for celebrating — the 150th anniversary of the archdiocese, the public reception of Archbishop Elko, and the formalpromulgation of the sixth Synod./These three unique occasions of special blessings on our beloved Archdiocese of Cincinnati evoke from us a most sincere prayer of thanksgiving to God,”he said. “The spirit of gratitude to God forms the very heart of our celebration today.Referring to the Synod, the Archbishop said its meaning is that “being a Catholic in the seventies makes demands on us in the same way that following Christ has always made such demands.In fact the greater needs of today make greater demands on us all. As Catholics, we profess our faith in and adherence to the values and commands of God given to us through His son, Jesus Christ. We cherish the signs and sacraments which Christ has committed to us. We declare our loyalty to the Catholic Church and to the Vicar of Christ, Pope Paul VI.It is our hope and prayer that the implementation of these documents will bring us to a better service of God and His people. To this end we pledge our prayers and energies.Archbishop Leibold, after expressing his personal thanks to all who took part in making the Synod possible w ent on to speak of the appointment of Archbishop Elko,“As Vicar General and Auxiliary Bishop, he will enable us to more fully' provide for the spiritual needs of our people, and he will participate in the administration of the diocese, which becomes more and more complex in today’s world, Archbishop Leibold said.lt;Continued on page 2)
