** •*»f. i\?nSTOP—by Bill Dyer%■yf.•*-iv?'tiCARDINAL 500 — Time trials start tomorrow at Martinsville Speedway as NASCAR’s top Modified stars attempt to qualify for Sunday’s $85,690 Cardinal 500 Classic.The double-header features a 250-lap race for both the Modified and Late Model Sportsman cars. Each race, covering 131.25 miles, pays $7,400 to the winner plus a $1,000 bonus in each event for the driver leading the most laps.Only 20'spots will be decided tomorrow. The drivers will be shooting for the Cardinal Modified qualifying record of 91.951 mph set last fall by Maynard'Trbyer of Rochester, N.Y., in a Pinto. Seventy-two Modifieds are entered with others expected and only the fastest will start.The favorites include Troyer, defending champ Geoff Bbdine, National champ Jerry Cook, 2i)-time Martinsville winner Ray Hendrick, Ray Miller, Charlie Jarzombek, Ed Flemke, Brian Ross. Paul Radford, Wayne Anderson, Bugs Stevens, Billy Hensley, 'tew Hennessy, Satch Worley, John Bryhnt, Merv Treichler, Richie Evans, Gene Bergen and Tommy Maier.The Late Model Sportsman cars will qualify Friday with 20 starting spots open. The 89 Sportsman, drivers entered will be shooting at the Cardinal track Sportsman qualifying mark of .86.353 mph set last fall by Butch Lindley of Greenville, S.CLinaNova.Favorites include Lindley, Hendrick, Radford, National champ L.D. Ottinger, A1 Grinnan, Sonny Hutchins,' Morgan Shepherd, Jack Ingram, Bill Dennis, Joe Thurman, Dave Dion, Sam Sommers, Randy Hutthison, Jack Bland, Jimmy Hensley, Johnny Allen, Harry Gant, defending champ Monk Tate, Tommy Ellis, Boscoe Lowe, Reds Kagle and Roy Hendrick, driving the Garland Ricketts Cougar.The remaining 20 starting positions for each race will be decided Saturday in six, 25-lap qualifying heats, three for each division.The Cardinal 500 Classic will start at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with the Modified race first.
