No Need for Scouts—OhioHas a Lot of Good FriendsCOLUMBUS, O. — Stocky Bofcby Watkins, the piston-legged blaster who plays right halfback for Ohio State, is merely emulating his father when he takes off on his touchdown excursions that are giving him quite a reputation as a speedster. The New Bedford (Mass.) junior knows he’ll have to go hard to beat the scholastic feats of his dad. The elder Watkins, now a crane operator in the New England city, led all the Massachusetts school players in scoring during his senior year at Dartmouth High School near New Bedford.Built like a fullback at five feet, nine inches and 192 pounds, the 21-year-old has excellent speed. Most naturally right-footed players have some difficulty in cutting back when running to their left, but not Watkins. How did Watkins come to land at Ohio State? Well, here’s the Buckeye star’s story:* “You know the Acushnet golf ball is manufactured in New Bedford and the president of the company is an Ohio State alumnus. He had seen me play in high school, and spoke about me to Roy Clymer, an Acushnet sales representative in Ohio.* (Clymer is a former head coach at Elyria High, which sent Vic Janowicz here.)“Well, I guess Clymer sort of boosted my stock with his friends at Ohio State, and I wanted to play in the Western Conference anyway, so here’s where I landed.”As a sophomore last fall, Bobby had a tough time with a leg injury that kept recurring. When he could play, he showed such driving power that he wound up the campaign as a regular right half in the backfield that included Quarterback %Tohn Borton, Halfback Fred Bruney and Fullback John Hlay.
