Pioneer Women Of Eureka RiverEureka River, October 16th. Some time ago we wrote a shortarticle on the pioneers of thisnorth country. At that time wedealt oniv with the men who came*early and started clearing the country, an example that has been followed by quite a number i since. W e feel it to be a duty, and it is indeed a pleasure to bear testimony to the part played b\ women in the early settlement of this part of the country.Mrs. Thomas Walker came to the country in 1919 with her hus-band and three children. For a young woman, from a social point of view, it was somewhat disheartening. but her natural happyion pulled her through the early lonesome period where many would have failed. Theyw ft.settled on the Montagneuse River, on the old Fort St. John trail and there it was her privilege and pleasure to act as hostess to nearly everyone who came into theft' ftcountry. With her husband andft*her children, who now numberfive, she is quite happy and naturally takes a great interest in the development of the community of which she is a worthy pioneer.Mrs. Wesley Morgan came in with her husband about the same time but moved farther on, to (dear Prairie. This was quite a distance from what were termed I “The Set tlements.” There Mrs.i i * *Morgan has remained since, rear j : her three children, made perlo'j j trips to the settlements and tuke,I an interest in the development; of the district. This year must| be exceptionally satisfactory to her, because realizing the benefits of education for the young people, she has been untiring in her efforts to secure a school. She lias thetrue pioneer spirit.Mis. W. J. Basnett was a littleiater than the others but has been in the district long enough to be rated with the pioneers, and she certainly has proved herself a true one. Reared in England she came out with her husband a numberof years ago and settled in thePincher Creek Country, but the%call of the Peace River countryftwas heard by Mr. Bassnett, whocame up, filing on land in theEureka River Valley. She soon joined him and has since resided here.At a t ime of life when women o! a different temperament wouio be anxious to retire from active work, she gladly shouldered tin burdens incidental to settling in a new country and constituted herself the guide and advisor of he: husband and son, Ben, in theirnew venture in the north. Toda\die weais her years lightly, is deeply interested in the hapf critics of the community and i-( •happy in the regular companion-hip of her grandchildren, wholailv must “go to see granny.”
