LOCAL(From Our Correspondent.)instead, October 22.— A cyclone of great force visited this town during the afternoon of last Wednesday and did much damage to bananas and other fruitful trees as well asbuildings.The cTay was bright and fair witnthe sun shining in all its splendour when at about 1.25 o clock, l^rgeblack clouds began to gather. Next came the drizzling rain and a alight breeze sprung up. In a few second*? a iter the rain was pouring in torrents while the wind wa* raging T.arw branches* of trees were seentoaPtNfisxttfc1iilt;lt;iiivlng through'the air, and huge■ttrees toppling ofer. Zinc sheets !j were blown from the roofs of shops, ind show glasses broken up in thefury of tin storm. The streets Vvereblocked in some places with the fallen trees, and labourers had to beemployed immediately after to clear these away. The streets were literally strewn with branches of trees. Coconuts were bloivrn off the trees In large numbers, while some of the trees were uprooted. A shed with zinc roofing owned by Mr. Robert March was bldwn down, while one Mfrs. Edith Nation's show glasses was badly smashed. (Mr. McFarlane's cornfield suffered very much; of an ( acre and a half, only a few stalks , were left standing here and there. Banana cultivalicli on a whole suffered most, and several of the peasant planters have been hard hit* Mr. Geynor loet nearly one hundred stems apart from young trees. M.r. Clark* also had his Held of bananas reduced by a large number, The wind did not last more than about five minutes, but the damage was severe.It would appear as if the •‘blow”was purely local. for beyond theproperty of New Works—three miles from here—where a feiw banana and other fruit trees were blown down, no damage was done. In fact, nobreeze nor rain wac experienced at Wallens twhich is but one mile from New Woriks.I
