SIXOpen house is he/cfWKST has anniversaryOpen house at a modem studio on Savannah-Gardner Rd. was held yesterday in celebration of 30 years of operation for WKST-Radio and the beginning of a new era with more power through a new transmitter.Visitors to the studio saw modem record studios and a large all-purpose studio that can present 70 per cent of the broadcasts via tapes There also is an emergency fallout shelter complete with equipment enabling the station to operate 30days after any national emergency. Any local, state or national broadcast can be transmitted, even to those on the Presidential circuits.The present site and equipment is a far cry from the small cramped quarters where the station began operation in 1938 in the Cathedral. From this one central studio and transmitter, atop the building, the station moved to the site in Shenango Township in 1958 for transmitting, with offices in the First Federal Building downtown.In 1961 the station became a part of the Scott chain with further enlargement and modernization and took over the studio used by the television station that was moved toYoungstown to become WYTV.Byron McConnell, present manager of WKST, recalled when he began with the station in 1947. He went to Youngstown for five years but returned.Other the years there have been several .managers, Sam Townsend, Art Graham, Harryl-aarReith and from 1962, McConnell, when the modernization and remodeling of the studios at the transmitter began Today the staff consists of four announcers, two engineers, four office girls, four on the managerial staff and a studio designed for sound and efficiency.Bvron McConnell
