Anniversary Couple of the WeekDowlings married 30 yearsCarl and Gloria (Bartholomew) Dowling were married on Oct 22, 1983, at the Mt. Zion Church in Wellsboro, by Lavem Holliday Carl and Gloria began dating in school, and by the time their wedding day arrived, had been going together for 10 years. While everyone usually expects the groom to be nervous on his wedding day, Carl felt calm. On the other hand, Gloria had the jitters, and the brim of her hat was quivering. She didn't notice, but everybody else did!Carl's first career was at Munson Lumber, in Covington. He ran the debarker, drove truck, and became the head sawyer. When that business closed in 1985, he started at Denney Electric, where he is now assistant manager doing sales and job quotes. Gloria worked at the Penn Wells until 1986, and when the family started, Carl described her new role as homemaker as Domestic Goddess.Gloria and Carl have two children: Ashley, married to Jay Smith, of Liberty; and Trida of Covington.Carl likes to hunt and fish, and make wine and sauerkraut. Gloria likes to cook and bake, decorate the house, crochet and do other crafts. They enjoy spending time together, visiting with their family, and traveling. They have attended Liberty Churchfor the last 10 years, and are very involved in the life of the congregation.Their advice for people starting out in marriage is to treat each other as best friends and equals, talk over major decisions and purchases, and honor the partnership you have formed.7he Anniversary Couple of the Week Contest is a coproduction of eight local businesses.
