Thompson's Big One Slated This WeekendThompson — There will be plenty of action at the Thompson Speedway, off route 193 in Thompson, Saturday afternoon as the large field of NASCAR modified cars try to qualify in the time trials and two twenty five lap heat events into the Thompson 500 lap stock car race to be run the next day Sunday October 26.The National Championship event carries a heavy weight in the point championship for 1969 for the modified drivers of the NASCAR International. Added points will be awarded the winner of the big event.The Saturday trials will determine the starting field for the 500. Starting at 10 a.m., the cars will take to the track for practice runs and then will come the time trials. The fastest cars on the two lap circuit of the speedway will advance into the big race. The balance of the speedway will advance into the big race. The balance of the starting field for the 500 will come from the front positions in the finish of the two twenty five lap qualifying events.Gates will open for the Saturday trials at 10 a.m. with the general admission for adults$2.20.The leading contenders for the front starting spots in the 500 lap grind are the top four drivers in the national rankings at present. Jerry Cook of Rome, New York, Carl Bugs Stevens of Rehoboth. Mass.,Perk Brown of Eden, N.C. and Bob Santos of Millis, Mass.These boys will have to contend with some of the top names in NASCAR modified stock car racing. Ed Flemke of New Britain, Ct., Nathan “Smokey” Boutwell of Pelham, N.H. Billy and Fred Schutlz of Foxboro, Mass. plus many others head the list.Raffle To Help Midget FootballSouth Windsor — A raffle sponsored by the South Wind sor Jaycees for the benefit of the pony and midget football teams, will be held Saturday at 3 p.m., at the athleticfield at Ayers and Nevers Rds.Mayor Howard E. Fitts will draw the winning ticket for a console color TV set.Beginning at 2 p.m., theJaycees will pass out 700 helium-filled balloons to youngsters who are accompanied by their parents, and everyone from six to 60 will, get free lollipops. Democratic and Republican candidates have been invited to attend the affair.South Windsor has one pony and two midget football teams which are supported by the Jaycees. This is their first annual football raffle.
