Local AAUW members attend Legislative DayThree members of the Janesville branch of the American Association of University Women attended Legislative Day in Madison.They are Judy Jaggard, Carolyn Krebs and Leslie Brunsell.The day examined issues of inequality for women and how AAUW proposes to address these issues through public policy.Judy Goldsmith, former president of the National Organization for Women, now a special consultant to the Chancellor for Equity and Affirmative Action at UW-Stevens Point, spoke on the need for equity in all areas of women’slives.Ceil Pillsbury, a professor in the business school at UW-Green Bay, talked about her denial of tenure at UW-Milwaukee and how it led to the Wisconsin Legislature’s bill to address discrimination in tenure cases.State AAUW leaders conducted sessions on comprehensive sexuality education curricula, problems women face in earning tenure in university systems, legislation to protect victims of abuse, how welfare reform programs impact women, universal health care proposals, recent and current Supreme Court cases affecting abortion rights and education and economic equity.AAUW has more than 3,500 members in 47 branches throughout Wisconsin.
