Anniversary of Marriage of Couple Who Crossed Plains in ’49 Is Observed.Et.K GBOVE, Sacramento County, Oct, 21.—Dr. and Mrs. James Caples recently celebrated. their 64th wedding: anniver-t sary at their ranch near here.Dr. Caples and his wife left their Kentucky home and crossed the plains in an ox train in *49. Mrs. Caples, then but IS, walked most of the way across and carried her baby.Arriving at Placervllle, they built * log house and Dr. Caples located a claim,; which, he worked'' one day and took out: 5100. The following day he was taken ill and was confined to his bed for three months. During this time Mrs. Caples, to supply the needs of the family, made; and sold dried apple pics at $1 each, and she managed to bake about twenty a day in an open fireplace.For ‘ the past twenty years the couple have resided on their Elk Grove ranch, and are well known throughout Sacramento county. Both the doctor and Mrs, Caples are bright and active and arlt;t enthusiastic members of the Grange.At the request of the state .librarian,. Mrs. Caples recently wrote an account of their early experiences, which has been filed in the Pioneers' library at Sacramento. 'They have eight children living, threti of-whom reside about the bay—Mrs. J, Brewster, residing in Alameda; Mrs. Jlt;, Haynes, at the St. Mark's hotel, Oaklt; land, and John Caples, who is on the San Francisco police forcel The other five live on or near the home ranch.
