'Phe origin of the study club movement among the women of ourtown can be traced to sucha progressive, persevering character.In the summer of 1898,Mrs. Peter Handley inviteda study club from Wylie and a few Garland women to meet at her home. The results of this enthusiastic gathering was the organization of the local women into a study club called The Shakespearean Twelve. ” The charter members of this club were Mrs. Handley, Mrs. W C. Witwer, Mrs N. S. Newland, Mrs. .John McDurmitt, Mrs. T. B. Floyd, Mrs. Maude Kingsley (now Mrs. Maude Daugherty), Miss Sal lie Harris (now Mrs. SalliePeck), Miss Dora Harris, Miss Marv Jones (nowMrs. Mary Halsell), Miss Mattie Jones (now Mrs.Mattie Sumners), Mrs. L. E. Watson, and Miss Lizzie Stephens (now Mrs. R. L. Kincaid.)After flourishing for awhile, the club was forced to disband on account of a number of the membersmoving away. But changing population brought changed conditions, andagain Mrs. Handley invited a group of women to her home to consider plans for organizing a study club.
