JJlAr.rxR’s Ffbry, Oct. 17.To-day at noon, the forces that started from here on a reeonnoi sauce towards AVine!)eater„ and whom our last despatches left quietly encamped at Charlejtmvn, returned to Bolivar Heighls, the object of the expeditionhiving been fully, faithfully awl successfully carried out.It was to fully examine the topography of the country bordering the turnpike, to drive'back’ to their main body any stray rebels that were there located, and finally to learn positively the position, condition and numbers of the enemy, 'J’lie following are the particulars since our last:—During the afternoon of Thursday, Gen. McClellan rode up to the front, and discovering that less than a mile from our advance line the rebels had three pieces of artillery planted, and that an indefinite number of their infantry and cavalry were roaming through the woods, lie at once ordered Gen. Caldwell, with Inn brigade, composed of the Seventh New York, Fifth New Hampshire and First Penn sylvan Its, to take the right of an advance, and the Fifty-third Pennsylvania, Fifty-seventh New York, First Minnesota, and the Sixty-first and Sixty-fourth New York, the latter consolidated into one regiment, detailed from Gen.. Caldwell’s brigade,under command of JJcut. Col. M iles, all the latter tomake up the left wing, and to be under the command of Col. Brooks.These were to advance and capture the batteries, if possible, and drive the rebels from tlie woods. The line was soon formed, spreading out flt;** a mile or more, and covering the entire open space it* front of the woods wheie seeesh was located.
