90 Years Old; Likes Poems Sports, Reading, Friends/fBy DOUG GEARY* Mrs. Maude Gallapoo of 318 W. Crawford St. will be 90 years old Thursday. She might celebrate her birthday bv memorizing a poem, watching the Olympics on television, reading, cooking, or making a new Ifriend.She likes poetry and can recite many poems from memory. She also is an avid sports enthusiast, and enjoys television prize-fights, wrestling, football, baseball and basketball.She recently took an even greater interest in basketball, since her grandson, Randy Gardner, is a member of the Van Wert High School basketball team.She lives across the street from Lincoln Junior High School, and likes to watch the children as they come and go from the school building. She takes an active interest in her own family, which includes three sons, four grand children, and eight great-grandchildren.“About a year ago, a lady came from Defiance and asked me for my life story, but I told her I didn’t have any,” she said.She was born in Adams County, Indiana, the daughter of a minister of the Calvary United Brethren Church. “We moved to Paulding County when I was about 8 years old,” she said. “I was a hayseed all my life ’till I moved to Van Wert.”She said she lived on a farm on U. S. 127, near the Blue •Creek bridge until about three years ago. “We raised livestock. I miss the farm and everything on it,” she said. ' Her husband, Frank A. Gallapoo, died in 1957. He was a! farmer and livestock raiser for! many years, according to his i son, Ralph Gallapoo, retired teacher and guidance counselor! at Van Wert High School.“Mother and father wanted to see that their three sons got a good education, and they did,” Gallapoo said.Mrs. Gallapoo's other two sons, Warren and Orren, arc twins, and both are engineers: Warren works for Dow Chemical Company in Jackson, Mich., and Orren works for the Babcock Wilcox Company in Barberton.I She reported that longevity runs in her family and that a I sister lived to be nearly 101 years old.She is a member of the Calvary EUB Church, and a lifetime member of the PythianSisters.Until recently, she took a j daily automobile ride. Two hip injuries force her to use a metal walker. She sometimes has difficulty hearing. “But my mind is clear, and I still like to make jokes,” she said.Mrs. Maude Gallapoo
