While the brigade was climbing over the fence out of the field, the enemy opened(ire. on our line and the battle began. The entire brigade rushed forwardin good order to the charge, anddrove back the enemy in our front and while hotly engaged with whatwe conceived to be the third line of (he enemy, our left was flanked and we compelled to retire a short distance. The men were promptly reformed and gallantly renewed thecharge. During this second advance, Thos, W. Manghnn, Col. commanding the regiment, was seriously wounded. Up to this timehe had handled his regiment with skill and behaved with coolness andconspicious gallantry, the command then devolved on me. The chargewas continued until we reached a point in advance of where we had previously gone, To relieve ourselves from a heavy fire, from our| left which was terribly destructive tothe 4th Ga. battallion and my regiment, we again fell back, reformed, and renewed the charge, but being overwhelmed by greatly superior numbers we were driven back to a point about two hundred yards of the fence we crossed going into battle.
