Dignitaries Slated For Hyte AnniversaryUnited States Senators Birch Bayh and Vance Hartke will be in Terre Haute Friday to attend the 34th anniversary celebration of the Charles T Hyte Community Center The distinguished senators along with community leaders and local residents will begin the celebration at 8:15 p.m. in the gymnasium of the Center, 1101 S. 13th St.Hartke, who is in his third term in the U.S. Senate, is seeking re-election to an unprecedented fourth term..The Honorable C. DeLores Tucker, secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. is the scheduled speaker at the anniversary celebratiom.‘•Senator Bayh, a close friend of Mrs. Tucker, will probably make a few informal comments at the dinner, Jean Conyers, chairperson of the event, said.Born and raised on a farm near Terre Haute, Bayh is in his third six-year term in the U.S. Senate.He defeated 18-year-veteran Republican Homer Capehart by a narrow 10,944 vote margin of 1,800,000 votes cast to win election in his first term in 1962.The Center is named for its founder, Charles T. Hyte, a black educator in Terre Haute.“The anniversary celebration is a way of sustaining community interest in the facility. the chairperson noted, the board is continuing to perpetuate the philosophy of the founder by developing capabilities of youth through leisure learning and recreational activities and by providing social, economic and health services Mayor William J Brighton will give the greetings from the city to more than 600 persons attending the dinner The invocation will be given by the Rev .Inhn ChironnaSee related story on page 12.the Rev.
