tiie shock. The new steam fire engine, “Washington No. 1,” was received last Friday. It is an Ahrens size No. 3, being one size smallerthan the Bredeick and presents a much lesscomplicated appearance than the old one owing to the difference in the boilers. The old one having a patent circulating boiler requiring considerable additional machinerywhile the new one has a tubular boiler. The new engine has an 8 inch cylinder and a 5inch pump with 7 inch stroke. On the first trial steam was raised in 5 minutes and 40seconds and an inch stream was thrown 202feet through two hundred feet of hose. The engine was under the charge of J. P. Ahrens, engineer of No. 7 Fire Company at Cincinnati, who soon proved himself thoroughly conversant with the machines and made ahost of warm friends during his short stay here.
