i ciuezu.roPULATios OK Altos.—Mr. E. F. Owen, who has jusl issued a new directory of thia city and county, took the census of Alton at the time he was canvassing the city, and found the population to be 11, lt;73, of these 5,996 were males, and 5,777 female*. W* know that Mr. Owen personally visited every dwelling in town and took down the number of inmates, and believe his census entirely correct. The population of the city in 1870 was 8 665, which shows an increase of 3,108 in four years. Of course none of these figures include Upper Alton, as some persons abroad might imagine, but only Alton City proper.
