Loved and respected pioneers of Montague county are Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Parr of Bowie whocelebrated their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary Sunday, October 1. Forty friends and relatives surprised them by bringing a bountiful lunch and helping them celebrate the occasion. They received fifty-eight telegrams and cards from relatives and friends,one message coming all the wayfrom China.Mrs. Parr was born at St. Louis, Mo. June 15, 1865. As a small child she came to Texas with her parents, settling in the Mallard community in Montague county. Mr. Parr is a native Texan, being born in Grayson county, seven miles north of Whitesboro, seventy-nine years ago.They were married on Sunday, October 2, 1882, in a quiet wedding at the bride’s home. Rev. Jackson, Methodist minister at Mallard, read the marriage ceremony. In the afternoon of their wedding day, the newly married couple attended a singing at Stoney Point, about four miles from the bride’s home. The trip was made horse back with the bride, in a lovely riding habit, riding a side saddle.The next morning they went to their home where Mr. Parr farmed for many years. In 1907, they moved to Bowie where they have since resided. Both are very active for their age. During their residence here Mr. Parr has taken an active part in civic affairs. For many years he served on the school board and City Council. At one time he served as one of the directors of the Security National Bank.Both have taken active part in the affairs of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church where Mr. Parr is an elder. Mrs. Parr formerly taught in the Sunday School but only substitutes for absent teachers at the present uptime.Montague Co. Parr were given a complete surprise Sunday, October 1, when friends and relatives gathered at their home honoring them on their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary.Mr. Parr is seventy-nine years of age and Mrs. Parr is seventy-four. They were married on Oct. 2, 1882 at Mallard, Texas, in Montague county, at the home of Mrs. Parr’s parents.Mr. and Mrs. Parr have six children. One, Mrs. Ed Bell, was : present for the occasion.Mrs. A. C. Tapp presented the cake, on which was placd a miniature bride and groom. Immediately preceding the covered dish luncheon prepared by those attending, a grand-daughter of the honorees, Miss Fannie Mae Bell, made a lovely poem, appropriate for the occasion, dedicating it to her grand-parents.The following friends and relatives, who have so much respect and admiration for Mr. and Mrs. Parr, enjoyed the occasion withthem: Their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bell and Miss Fannie Mae Bell of Wizard Wells, Rev.
